04.File Transfer
04 File Transfer
WxTerm provides multiple file transfer methods, covering SSH (SFTP), serial/Telnet (Modem protocols), TFTP, and other scenarios.
4.1 SFTP File Transfer (SSH Session)
SSH sessions come with an SFTP subsystem, so file transfer works without extra configuration. File management is done through the file browser panel in the SSH sidebar.
Open the File Browser Panel
When the currently active tab is an SSH session, click the “File” icon in the SSH sidebar’s icon bar to open the file browser panel.

- Download: download to local (multi-selection downloads in batch to the same local directory).
- Select All: select all entries in the panel.
- Copy / Cut / Paste: remote file clipboard — copy/move files between directories of the same connection (pasting into another connection shows a not-supported notice).
- Rename: rename the file/folder.
- Delete: delete the file/folder (confirmation required).
- Copy Path: copy the file’s absolute path to the clipboard.
- Permissions: view and change file permissions (chmod).
Right-click on a folder (additional items):
- Upload File / Upload Directory: upload local files or a whole directory into this folder.
- Download Directory: recursively download the whole folder.
- New File / New Directory: create inside this folder.
Right-click on empty space:
- New Directory / New File
- Upload File / Upload Directory: upload into the current directory.
- Select All / Paste
- Copy Path: copy the current directory path.
- Refresh: reload the current directory.
4.2 Drag-and-Drop Transfer
WxTerm supports OS-native file drag-and-drop, enabling bidirectional drag-and-drop transfer between the local file manager and the remote.
Drag from local to remote (upload)
- Select files in the local file manager.
- Drag them to the SSH sidebar file browser panel in the WxTerm window.
- Release when the cursor changes to a copy icon (⊕); the files are added to the transfer queue and uploaded.
Drag from remote to local (download)
- Select remote files in the SSH sidebar file browser panel.
- Drag them to the local file manager or desktop.
- The files are downloaded to the drop location.
Drag-and-drop transfer feature is available in all plans.
4.3 Upload/Download Dialog
In addition to drag-and-drop, you can also upload/download via the menu:
Upload File
- Menu “Tools → Upload/Download → Upload File”.
- A local file selection dialog appears; after selecting files, the upload begins to the remote working directory of the current SSH session.
Download File
- Menu “Tools → Upload/Download → Download File”.
- A remote file browser dialog appears; after selecting a remote file, a local save dialog appears.

4.4 Transfer Queue
All file transfer tasks (upload/download) enter the transfer queue for unified management, supporting batch, resume, and conflict handling.
Open the Transfer Queue
- Click “Transfer task count” in the status bar.
- Switch to the “Transfer List” panel in the SSH sidebar.

Queue Information
Each transfer item shows:
- File name
- Transfer direction (upload ↑ / download ↓)
- Status (Waiting / Transferring / Complete / Failed / Paused)
- Progress percentage
- File size
Queue Operations
- Pause / Resume: pause or resume a single task.
- Cancel: cancel unfinished tasks.
- Retry: retry failed tasks.
- Clear Completed: clean up completed and cancelled task records.
- View Details: double-click a task to view detailed transfer info (speed, remaining time, transferred bytes, etc.).
File Conflict Handling
When a file with the same name already exists at the destination, a file conflict dialog appears:

Available actions:
- Overwrite: replace the target file.
- Skip: do not transfer this file.
- Rename: automatically rename the transferred file.
- Append/Resume: continue from the breakpoint (if supported).
- Overwrite All / Skip All: apply the same strategy to all subsequent conflicts.
Transfer queue feature is available in all plans.
4.5 TFTP Server
WxTerm has a built-in TFTP server, convenient for transferring firmware and configuration files to network devices (routers, switches, IP phones, etc.).
Start the TFTP Server
- Menu “Tools → TFTP Server”.
- In the dialog that appears, configure:
- Listen port: default 69.
- Root directory: the file root directory for the TFTP service.
- Allow upload: whether to allow remote file writes.
- Allow overwrite: whether to allow overwriting existing files.
- Click “Start” to begin the service; the menu item shows ✓ to indicate it is running.

Use Cases
- Network device firmware upgrade: the device acts as a TFTP client and pulls firmware from WxTerm.
- Configuration file backup: the device pushes its configuration to WxTerm’s TFTP server.
- PXE boot: combined with DHCP to provide PXE boot files.
TFTP server feature is not available in the Free version; available in Trial and above.
4.6 Serial/Telnet File Transfer (Modem Protocols)
For serial and Telnet connections (no SFTP), WxTerm supports file transfer via in-terminal Modem protocols:
| Protocol | Send | Receive | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text | Tools → Send File → Text | Tools → Receive File → Text | Plain text file, sent character by character |
| Binary | Tools → Send File → Binary | — | Binary file sent as raw stream |
| Xmodem | Tools → Send File → Xmodem | Tools → Receive File → Xmodem | 128⁄1024 byte blocks, single file |
| Ymodem | Tools → Send File → Ymodem | Tools → Receive File → Ymodem | Xmodem improvement, supports batch and filenames |
| Zmodem | Tools → Send File → Zmodem | Tools → Receive File → Zmodem | Auto rate adjustment, resume, most commonly used |
| Kermit | Tools → Send File → Kermit | Tools → Receive File → Kermit | Cross-platform reliable transfer protocol |
Usage Flow (Zmodem example)
Send file to remote device:
- Enter the receive command on the remote device’s command line (e.g.
rz). - Menu “Tools → Send File → Zmodem”.
- Select a local file and start the transfer.
Receive file from remote device:
- Enter the send command on the remote device’s command line (e.g.
sz filename). - WxTerm detects the Zmodem start frame and automatically pops up the receive dialog, or manually via menu “Tools → Receive File → Zmodem”.
- Select a local save location and start receiving.

Modem protocol transfer progress can be viewed via the transfer indicator in the status bar during transfer; cancellation is supported.
4.7 Transfer Status Indicators
The right side of the status bar shows real-time transfer-related indicators:
| Indicator | Meaning | Click action |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer task count ↑↓ | Current SFTP transfer task count | Click to restore the transfer queue panel |
| Receive task count | Current receive task count | Click to restore the receive task list |
| Modem transfer count | Current Modem protocol transfer count | Click to restore the Modem transfer dialog |
4.8 Drag-Out of the Window
WxTerm supports dragging files out of the window from the SSH sidebar file browser panel (e.g. to the desktop or another file manager), enabling native download. When dragged out, the OS starts a native drag-and-drop and the file downloads in the background to the drop location.
Drag-out of the window feature depends on the OS’s native drag-and-drop support; may be limited under Linux Wayland.
