Chapter 2. Interface Overview

wxreader has two window kinds: the library window (a single instance managing all books) and reader windows (one per open book).

2.1 Library window

Library window

Top to bottom:

Area Contents
Title bar Window drag area, maximize/minimize/close; language and theme dropdowns on the right (submenus open to the left)
Menu bar “Books”, “Edit”, “View”, “Options”, “Tools”, “Help”
Toolbar “Import” and “Sort” dropdown buttons, multi-select toggle, title/author search box at the far right
Left menu All Books / Favorites / My Notes / My Marks / My Shelves (with “New Shelf” and “Manage” buttons); collapsible
Book area Card / list / cover views (see 3.2), scrollbar on the right edge
Status bar Total book count, import progress

Six menus:

  • Books: Import Books / Import Folder / Import Comics / Exit
  • Edit: Select All / Cut / Copy / Paste (book organizing, see 3.6)
  • View: Card View / List View / Cover View, expand or collapse the menu bar (this actually toggles the left sidebar)
  • Options: Settings / Custom Theme / Keymap
  • Tools: Manage Shelves
  • Help: Keyboard Shortcuts / Check for Updates / About WxReader

2.2 Reader window

Reader window

Double-click a book to open it; the window maximizes automatically:

Area Contents
Title bar “Contents” button (hamburger, leftmost, toggles the sidebar), centered book title, favorite star, language/theme dropdowns, window controls
Contents sidebar “Contents” and “Search” tabs (CHM adds an “Index” tab; comics have only “Contents”) + filter box + tree list; click an entry to jump, click the arrow to expand/collapse
Content panel Switches by format: text (EPUB/MOBI/MD/TXT), PDF, comic, CHM panels (see Chapter 4)
Bottom toolbar Prev / page number / Next · zoom (−/fit/+, a dropdown menu for comics) · view mode / font size · copy, note, mark, settings

Re-opening a book does not spawn a second window: the existing one is focused and jumps to the position. Double-clicking an already-open book in the library brings its window to front.

2.3 macOS differences

  • The traffic-light buttons sit at the very left; the contents button yields to them.
  • The in-window menu bar collapses to zero height and is replaced by the native system menu bar (NSMenu) with minimize ⌘M, zoom, quit ⌘Q and the six main menus; dynamic language/theme lists remain in the title bar dropdown.
