Chapter 5. Comic Reading

A comic (image folder) is “one folder = one book” in wxreader: importing writes a single record to the library, and the sub-folders inside appear as a tree TOC in the reader’s contents sidebar — like a PDF with a complete outline: the tree is built when the book opens, and you simply keep reading down.

5.1 Importing

“Books → Import Comics” and pick the comic’s root folder (e.g. the folder of the whole series):

  • Book title = folder name; cover = the first image in reading order.
  • Arbitrary nesting depth (volume/chapter/issue levels), capped at 12.
  • Supported images: png / jpg / jpeg / gif / bmp / webp.
  • Empty folders (no images anywhere in the subtree) are pruned from the tree.

5.2 Tree TOC

Comic tree TOC

  • Folder nodes: the arrow on the left expands/collapses; clicking the row jumps to that volume’s first page.
  • Image leaves: clicking the row jumps to that page.
  • Auto-expansion: opening the book expands the volume containing the restored progress; crossing into a new volume while paging expands it too (e.g. pressing “next” on the last page of volume 1 lands on volume 2’s first page and expands volume 2 in the tree). Manually expanded volumes are never auto-collapsed.
  • Current page highlight: blue left bar + highlighted row, moving as you page.
  • Filter box: filters by volume/page name live (matches plus their ancestors are shown, all expanded).
  • The tree order is the reading order: page down through the tree.

5.3 Sort rules

Entries within each folder (images and sub-folders interleaved) sort like this:

  1. Cover pages first: images whose name contains cover / 封面 / 目录 / 目錄 / 表紙 / 目次 go to the front.
  2. Regular entries: ascending natural sort —
    • digit runs compare numerically: vol9 < vol10, page2 < page10;
    • ASCII digits and CJK numerals are unified: 第2卷 equals 第二卷 numerically, and 第二卷 < 第十卷 < 第十一卷;
    • ASCII letters are case-insensitive;
    • remaining characters (including non-numeric CJK) sort by Unicode code point, deterministically.
  3. Back pages last: images whose name contains 封底 / 版权 / 版權 / 裏表紙 / 奥付 / 書脊 / 彩頁 / 拉頁 go to the end.

5.4 Reading interaction

  • Wheel paging: when an image is larger than the viewport the wheel pans first; continuing to scroll at the edge turns the page (scroll down at the bottom = next page, up at the top = previous); horizontal wheel pans sideways.
  • Drag panning: hold the left button and drag to move the image (when oversized; the cursor becomes a grab hand); drags over 4 px never trigger an accidental page turn.
  • Zoom: clicking the toolbar zoom box opens a menu — Fit plus 10% ~ 200% steps; zooming or changing pages re-centers the view.
  • Two-page mode: choose “Two pages” in view mode; pages advance in pairs.
  • Clicking the left/right edge of the view also turns pages.

5.5 Differences from other formats

  • The contents sidebar has only the “Contents” tab — no search tab (images have no text to search).
  • Progress = image index in recursive reading order; deleting the book record never touches the source folder.
